Model Train Layout Space Planning

Model Train Layout Space Planning

Model train layout Space PlanningPlanning a model railway layout can be difficult, but knowing where to start is the hardest part, space planning is the first stage to consider when you embark on a new model railway project.

The mistake most people make in buying their first model train set is not knowing beforehand how much space it will take to set it up or how much room you will need.

A model railway can fit almost anywhere, but making it fit requires an understanding of space constraints and what you want to achieve.

Where to Start your Model Train Layout

The first thing you need to decide is, do you want to be able to frequently change your track layout or do you want to build a permanent track layout.

  • Changing your track layout – All you need is a tabletop 2400 x 1200 (8’x4’) with a felt tabletop.
  • Permanent track layout – There is a lot more involved such as train scale etc.

I Suggest playing with temporary layouts for a while to get the feel and understanding of what you will need for a more permanent model train layout.

Permanent Model Train Layouts

Permanent model train layouts require serious planning from the scale of the model train to how much space you will need. The choice of scale will make a big difference in having long term satisfaction with your model train and the allocated space.

HO and N scales outsell other scales because of the large range of trains and tracks as well as scenery and buildings and are the most popular choices and most people can find space in a bedroom, den, basement or garage.

O scale takes a lot of room, whereas the Z scale takes a lot less room and is more suitable for apartments.

You also need to consider when planning the space for your model train the reach you will need if it is against the wall (2440 x 1220 (8’ x4’)) can you reach the other side, if not you may need to move your layout from the wall to get all the way around. If your train comes off the track on the other side you will need to be able to reach it.

Conclusion

Unsure whether you have enough space to install your model railway? Having the right tools and understanding of how to plan your layout can help you make the most of your space, save money on unnecessary purchases, and provide a finished layout you’ll be proud of.
