Model Train Construction

Before you start

  1. You will need to know what model train scale you are using.
  2. Track plan. (Model train layouts)
  3. You need to decide on the size of baseboard construction you’re going to create. (Make sure it will fit into your build room)
  4. Will your model train layout be fixed (Make sure it will fit into your build room) or portable (Make sure it will fit into your Car)?

What you’ll need

  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Square
  • PVA Glue

Model Train Base Construction

Having a good foundation to build your model railway on is the most important part of your model railway. If your base construction is good and planned properly the rest of your layout will be easy. Remember to leave space around the track for scenery.

Most modellers use plywood for the base, it is strong enough and reasonably light. Make sure you use 9mm or 10mm, anything thinner will need bracing to stop it from sagging.

A Quick Guide to Construction

  1. Make the train table and paint the top dark brown or dark green. Layout all track on the table and run for several days to decide if this is the set-up you want.
  2. Layout the streets and roads, allowing for building lots on each side of the road. Paint the road black in the country and grey in the city. Build mountains and tunnels, bridges, rivers and creeks.
  3. Set all buildings in place, and if using lighting drill a hole through for wiring. Tack glue two corners of the building in place. Spot glue trees and shrubs, usually around bare areas. Repaint areas around houses with green paint, mixed with sand to add texture. Paint around industrial areas with brown or beige paint. Allow for parking areas, grey for cement or sand colour for worn areas on grass.
